Antigua and Barbuda and Cyprus Strengthen Multilateral Cooperation Ahead of CHOGM 2026

Antigua and Barbuda continues to expand its diplomatic engagement as preparations advance for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2026, scheduled to take place in St. John’s from 1–4 November 2026. In this context, the Honourable E. P. Chet Greene, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Barbuda Affairs, held a bilateral meeting with His Excellency Andreas Kakouris, Ambassador and Special Envoy for Multilateralism of the Republic of Cyprus.

Reinforcing Longstanding Diplomatic Relations

During the meeting, Minister Greene reaffirmed the longstanding friendship between Antigua and Barbuda and Cyprus, highlighting the shared commitment of both nations to multilateral cooperation, international law, and sustainable development. These principles remain central to their engagement within the Commonwealth and the broader international community.

The discussions also touched on Ambassador Kakouris’ candidacy for the Presidency of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (2026–2027). Minister Greene extended Antigua and Barbuda’s best wishes, noting that strong and effective leadership at the UN General Assembly will be essential in addressing the challenges facing small and vulnerable states, particularly in areas such as climate action and sustainable development.

Collaboration on the Blue Economy

A key topic of the meeting was Antigua and Barbuda’s plans for a high-level side event on “Blue Finance and Innovation” during CHOGM 2026. The event is expected to explore new opportunities for sustainable ocean development, including marine conservation, sustainable fisheries, ocean-based renewable energy, and investment in blue economy sectors.

Recognizing Cyprus’ strong maritime heritage and growing interest in the blue economy, Minister Greene welcomed the potential for collaboration. This may include contributions from Cypriot institutions and experts who could participate in policy discussions and provide technical insights into sustainable ocean governance.

Building Partnerships for CHOGM 2026

Both sides also explored opportunities for technical cooperation in the lead-up to CHOGM 2026, including the sharing of best practices in conference management, multilateral event coordination, and programming related to sustainable development.

The meeting concluded with both Antigua and Barbuda and Cyprus reaffirming their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and working together in international forums. Their ongoing engagement reflects a shared vision of collaboration and collective action on issues of global importance.

Delegation Participation

Minister Greene was accompanied by Her Excellency Karen-Mae Hill, High Commissioner at the Antigua and Barbuda High Commission in London, along with Ms. Chantal Phillip, Minister Counsellor.

Looking Ahead

As Antigua and Barbuda prepares to welcome leaders and delegates from across the Commonwealth in November 2026, diplomatic engagements such as this meeting with Cyprus demonstrate the country’s commitment to building partnerships that support sustainable development, multilateral cooperation, and successful delivery of CHOGM 2026.
